For seven years I was a History and Social Studies teacher and taught middle school and high school students in the American public school system. A very small school district hired me fresh out of college. Because the school district was so small, educators at the secondary level were required to teach more than one subject area. I was responsible for the American History, World History, Social Studies, Global Issues, Sociology, and Creative Writing classes.

I felt overwhelmed, to put it mildly. I prepared lesson plans for six different disciplines and I had to do it in a way that engaged the students AND met our state's curriculum standards. My life revolved around creating lesson plans, worksheets, ideas for projects, tests, and grading everything as well. On top of that, I needed to master the art of classroom management. I needed to walk that fine line between being fair, yet firm; commanding respect while still relating well with the students.

Many times that first year, I felt that I was in way over my head!

Currently I am working towards my Master's degree in History and writing my first book. I created this website for a few reasons. First, my personal computer is loaded with the work I created during those seven years of teaching. Assignments, worksheets, project instructions, grading rubrics, PowerPoints, tests, etc. have all been saved. Instead of just sitting there idly, I would like to put them to use and hopefully help other struggling teachers out there. Second, when I first started teaching I looked all over the World Wide Web for a place where I could get help, ideas, and be able to vent and share with other secondary, social studies teachers.

So much of what I found online was geared specifically for elementary school teachers. I found little in the way of resources specifically for high school teachers and in particular, social studies and history teachers. I want OwlTeacher.com to be that for you. It is my hope that you find everything you need here, and if you don't, please let me know as I am always looking to improve the site. Thank you for visiting and please tell your colleagues about OwlTeacher.com!
